Allergy Awareness Week 2016 - Spreading the word with the educators

With Allergy Awareness week in full swing, the kids made their way to school and child care to help raise awareness with the help of their teachers.

It was fantastic to watch these young kids get up in front of their peers and teachers to talk about living with allergies and raise awareness at so many levels.

The kids are pictured here painting one nail of their teachers hands to signify that one in 10 children is diagnosed with an allergy.

So Proud

Types of Allergies 10-2-16

It is amazing how many allergies are out there and how differently each of us can react. Only yesterday our youngest son was at kinder and a mum innocently brought her dog into class to pick up her twins. He immediately told the kinder teacher of his allergies and the parent was asked to leave with the dog.

At Christmas time Leon was standing next to a wet dog at a pool party. The dog shook water onto Leon's face which instantly gave him an allergic reaction. This included swelling to his nose and face which took 3 days for the swelling to come down fully. Even with appropriate medications, and creams nothing could ease his pain. This was also caused from a hypoallergenic dog which in this case means nothing. This child has now developed a fear of dogs and jumps every time one comes near him. I am so proud of him informing the teacher, or yesterday's events may have been very different. Especially without his parents around. Stay safe everyone.

Back to school preparation 30/1/2016

With less than four days before the school year begins for us, I decided I should get baking.

In preparation for snacks, school lunches, after school snacks and quick dinners, for those evenings you are at after school activities and you just dont have enough time to come home and prepare a hearty meal.

Unlike most other families, we cant just grab takeout as our many food allergies prove difficult to cater for all 3 kids.

I tend to make big batches of the foods I know the kids enjoy and freeze them in tupperware, using Go-between freezer fill, in between layers where required.

Today I chose to make:

  • Sausage rolls
  • Mini chicken pies
  • Veggie burgers using fresh ingredients from the garden
  • Family meat pie
  • Popcorn chicken
  • Pasta sauce ready for spag bol or lasagne
  • Mini cupcakes with a drop of lemon frosting
  • Zucchini loaf with cream cheese frosting (which i will cut into portions ready for lunchboxes before freezing)
  • Muesli Bars

Here is some of what I achieved today

I really do enjoy cooking, however during the week it becomes very difficult 3 kids, school, homework, sports, dinner, baths and a husband.

Just choosing whats for dinner can be stressful when you are time poor, so its great to have some backup options in the freezer.

Good luck for the school year everyone and happy cooking.

I will have some fresh ideas next baking day.

Pita (Onion Pie) - 8/6/15

There is nothing quite like the aromas of Pita baking on a cold winters day. The flaky pastry going absolutely everywhere, from a pie that is so delicious and mouth watering.

Due to our allergies we have steered clear of the traditional spanakopita which is full of eggs, cheese and spinach.

We much prefer caramalised onions with sweet hungarian paprika. There is always a fight for the crust. So in recent times my well travelled Aunt has shown me an easy way to ensure that every piece has a crust excluding the centre cut out, as shown in the photos.

This long weekend my family has feasted on Pita and enjoyed sharing some special times together. It brought back memories of my childhood on the farm.

Allergy Week 2015 - Fundraising Total 23/5/15

WOW!!, what an amazing end to Allergy Week 2015. Thank you to all involved with raising awareness and supporting a cause so close to our hearts. We raised a grand total of $520 that will go to Allergy and Anaphylaxis Australia to fund research into finding a cure for Allergies.

One of the big winners, that helped people get on board was our Allergy Friendly food platters for the staff lunch rooms. Local businesses purchased these platters for their staff to show that allergy friendly food can be very tasty and simple.

If you are interested in some of our allergy friendly platters, please contact us for a quote.
